About & How It Works

Technical calculation logic, standards, and operational details

The Strong Password Generator creates cryptographically random passwords using the browser's native Web Cryptography API (window.crypto.getRandomValues()), the same entropy source used by operating systems for TLS key generation and full-disk encryption. Unlike passwords produced by Math.random() — which is a deterministic pseudo-random number generator (PRNG) seeded from predictable values — window.crypto.getRandomValues() draws from the OS-level hardware random number generator (HRNG), producing passwords with maximum unpredictability. The tool supports configurable character sets (uppercase A–Z, lowercase a–z, digits 0–9, and 32 printable symbols), variable length (8–128 characters), and displays a real-time password entropy strength meter measured in bits.

Algorithmic Logic & Calculation

The generator builds a character pool from the selected character sets (uppercase: 26, lowercase: 26, digits: 10, symbols: 32). It calls crypto.getRandomValues() to fill a Uint32Array with n cryptographically secure random 32-bit integers, where n equals the desired password length. Each integer is then reduced modulo the pool size (random_int % pool.length) to select a character, eliminating modulo bias by using rejection sampling when the pool size does not divide evenly into 2^32. Password entropy (in bits) = log₂(pool_size^length) = length × log₂(pool_size), displayed on a color-coded strength gauge.

Technical Standards & Compliance

Password generation uses NIST SP 800-90A/B/C cryptographic random bit generator standards via Web Cryptography API (W3C Recommendation). Password strength assessment follows NIST SP 800-63B Digital Identity Guidelines.

Key Features & Capabilities

CSPRNG via Web Crypto API

Uses window.crypto.getRandomValues() — the same cryptographic entropy source as TLS and disk encryption.

Configurable Character Sets

Toggle uppercase, lowercase, digits, and symbols independently to match any password policy.

Entropy Strength Meter (bits)

Calculates and displays password entropy in bits — the scientifically correct measure of password strength.

Adjustable Length Slider (8–128)

Drag a slider to set password length from 8 to 128 characters with live preview update.

Practical Real-World Use Cases

Secure Account Registration

Users generate strong, unique passwords for banking portals, email accounts, and social media profiles without reusing predictable patterns.

IT Admin & System Credentials

System administrators generate high-entropy service account passwords, API secrets, and database root credentials for production environments.

Password Manager Seeding

Users generate random master passwords or site-specific credentials to store in KeePass, Bitwarden, or 1Password vaults.

How to Use

  1. Adjust the password length slider (e.g. 16 to 32 characters).
  2. Check or uncheck character sets (uppercase, lowercase, numbers, symbols).
  3. Click "Generate Password" and copy to clipboard.
