About & How It Works

Technical calculation logic, standards, and operational details

The BMI (Body Mass Index) Calculator measures the ratio of body weight to height squared, producing an internationally recognized screening metric for underweight, normal weight, overweight, and obesity classifications. The tool supports both Metric (kilograms and centimetres) and Imperial (pounds and inches) unit systems and applies two separate classification tables: the standard WHO global thresholds and the WHO Asia-Pacific refined thresholds, which account for the statistically higher cardiometabolic risk observed in East and Southeast Asian populations at lower BMI values than their Western counterparts. The calculator also computes your ideal healthy weight range for your given height.

Algorithmic Logic & Calculation

The BMI formula is: BMI = weight(kg) / (height(m))ยฒ. For imperial inputs, the tool converts pounds to kilograms (รท 2.20462) and inches to metres (รท 39.3701) before applying the formula. The result is then compared against two threshold tables: WHO global (Underweight <18.5, Normal 18.5โ€“24.9, Overweight 25.0โ€“29.9, Obese โ‰ฅ30.0) and WHO Asia-Pacific (Underweight <18.5, Normal 18.5โ€“22.9, Overweight 23.0โ€“24.9, Obese โ‰ฅ25.0). Healthy weight range is back-calculated from normal BMI bounds for the entered height.

Technical Standards & Compliance

BMI classifications follow the World Health Organization (WHO) Global Database on Body Mass Index standards and the WHO Asia-Pacific Perspective (2000) recommendations for Asian populations.

Practical Real-World Use Cases

Annual Health Screening

Workers and employees use BMI as a pre-screening self-assessment tool before their annual physical health check at Cambodian hospitals.

Personal Fitness & Weight Management

Gym members and personal trainers track BMI progress over weeks and months as a fitness metric alongside body fat percentage.

Nutritional Counselling

Dietitians and community health workers in rural Cambodia use BMI to identify malnourished patients and recommend supplementary feeding programs.

How to Use

  1. Choose metric (kg/cm) or imperial (lbs/inches) units.
